Gayathri Mantra

Om bhur bhuvah svah tat savitur varenyam
bhargo devasya dhimahi dhiyo yonah prachodayat

Meaning:

WE MEDITATE ON THAT ISVARA'S GLORY WHO HAS CREATED THE UNIVERSE WHO IS FIT TO BE WORSHIPPED WHO IS THE EMBODIMENT OF KNOWLEDGE AND LIGHT, WHO IS THE REMOVER OF ALL SINS AND IGNORANCE. MAY HE ENLIGHTEN OUR INTELLECTS.

Explanation of the Mantra:

Gayatri is the embodiment of all forms of Godhead - Sarva Devatha Swaroopam. Gayatri does not belong to any caste, to any sect or to any religion as such. It is universal in its scope. Gayatri has nine important attributes. These are:

  1. Aum : Sound as the basis of Creation, Brahman
  2. Bhur : The Earth, the gross
  3. Bhuvah : The Atmosphere, the Ether, the Subtle.
  4. Svah : Heaven, the region beyond Bhuvah the Causal.
  5. Tat : Stands for That. The Ultimate Reality is simply referred to as That because it defies description through speech or language.
  6. Savitur : Stands for Divine Savitri, equated with the vivifying power contained within the Sun.
  7. Varenyam: Adore
  8. Bhargo : Radiance, Lustre, Illumination
  9. Devasya : Divine Radiance or Grace.
  10. Dhimahi: Meditation or knowledge of the Absolute
  11. Dhiyo: Buddhi, intellect
  12. Yonah: Our energies, our actions
  13. Prachodayat: Inspire

"Tribhirgunamayairbhavairebhih Sarvamidam Jagat
Mohitam Nabhijanati Mamebhyah Paramavyayam"

The whole world is engrossed in the three elements of Satva, Raja, and Tama. This is the reason, people don't recognize the Eternal God who is beyond them.
